Back for just a little bit of painting fun today. Nothing too crazy, or at least I hope it doesn’t go that way. No, we should be safe. I’ve decided to take a break from my usual recipes and pouring mediums and just go back to basics with PVA glue. I’ve not used it very often at all so I’ll be interested to see how it works out.
I’m using for this painting:
- PVA glue as a pouring medium at about 20-30% of the paint volume
- Paints from Blick Acrylics in Violet
- Yellow Ochre from Art Alternatives
- A turquoise mixed from Pthalo Green and Ultramarine Blue with some Titanium White
- Treadmill silicone oil
I’m layering the paints into the cup a little differently today too because I would like them to be less mixed and more distinct in the final painting. Of course I’ll do a flip cup to mix them a little, but fingers crossed for broader areas of those lovely colors.
Although I loved it out of the cup and even when I’d finished it, now I’m not feeling the love as much. Do you get that on your own paintings? You love it, then you doubt yourself. Hmm, maybe it’s not so good after all. But leave it a couple of weeks, look again and perhaps you find the joy again. It’s an interesting process.

After being told in high school that she was so bad at art that she should switch to another subject, Deby didn’t paint again for 35 years. Then a stroke released a new wave of creativity and she began exploring with dot painting, abstract and eventually acrylic pouring, and at last the joy of working with color returned. You don’t need ‘talent’ to be an acrylic pouring artist – just enthusiasm, some basic instruction, and a willingness to try, fail and try again. Paint along with her and learn from her many mistakes, and you’ll soon make great art together.
Debbie I think that your color choices were great! I have done some of this work but I mix resin/epoxy with the paints and it turns out pretty cool.

I totally get that you didn’t like it, and honestly I’m grateful you were honest enough to admit that! A few of my pieces I was embarrassed to share, then people told me they were their favorite! It’s a great reminder that while in a way art is for the artist, our own perceptions and criticisms could end up depriving someone else from something they may find intriguing or inspiring. Personally, I love this piece and the color palette! The marbling effect in the top of the painting really draws me in. Thanks for sharing!
The yellow ochre works really well… I thought it was metallic gold at first! I haven’t used metallic paints in pouring yet…. any tips?
What is the Treadmill silicone oil for? Can one just use the glue and coloring with and expect to get the same results?

You might be lucky and get cells, but the silicone oil (or the alternatives) are there to make the effect easier to achieve. Check out this article and video about the sort of oils and products you can use to get cells in your paintings.

Do you find that the glue turns yellow over time? It would be cheaper to use than the pouring medium but I wonder about the possibility of it turning yellow
We haven’t noticed anything turn yellow, but if it’s for a piece you’re selling I would use pouring medium
Deby, I really enjoyed your video. I am fairly new to acrylic pouring. Been trying out things for about 18 months without very much success. So I watched your video because I thought I’d try pva glue and wanted to see how it worked. Well I was astounded! Wish I’d tried it sooner. I was so pleased with my pour! I particularly loved that you said you should be bringing the washing in! I know that feeling. The family don’t suffer but we have more take always these days as I just can’t stop once I start pouring!

I love your work . I am new at this maybe 5 months and I have been using the Elmers glue . But my colors seem to be fading into the base coat and I don’t know why please help
The first step is the hardest. So far I have not taken that “first”. Learning from those who have been brave has been a great education and I am close to doing it. Thank you for being one of those from whom I have gained knowledge on this intriguing art form.

I regularly use school glue, which is dirt cheap at back-to-school time, and mix it 1:1:1/2 (paint:glue:water). Water is variable for proper consistency. Never been sorry.
