Reflecting on my Year as an Acrylic Pourer

The end of the year isn’t just a time to make resolutions and to set goals, but also a time to reflect on what has come to you this year. For me, this was my first year as an acrylic pourer. It all started after I fell in to what I call a YouTube hole, one video leads to another, leads to another, and so on and so until its 2am. I stumbled onto the acrylicpouring.com channel completely by accident, Debbie Coles’ rainbow pour I believe was what got me hooked, and gave me the acrylic pouring bug.

I like to do my homework on everything before I get started on any project, be it art, a new recipe, or some home improvement project. I watched what I think were all of Debbie’s videos before checking out other contributors and then deciding where I wanted to begin.

Unfortunately, my ego got in the way in my beginning as a pourer and in a fit of creative frustration I scrapped my first few pours. They were muddy with bald spots and mismatched colors, I thought about giving up before I’d really begun. But I went back to the YouTube channel, back to the blog, back to the community and began again. One of the things I am most thankful to have come to me this year was the art of acrylic pouring.

Acrylic pouring has given some of my sleepless nights a purpose. It’s given me a way to tune out the excess noise and negativity of daily life. It’s exposed me to an all new art style that can take simple paint and household supplies and turn canvas or anything that needs a little something extra in to a cellular swirl of color. It is beautiful in its unpredictability and relaxation can be found in the gentle tilting and pouring and stretching of color and cell.

I’ve grown a lot as a pourer, taken chances, done my fair share of experimentation, and have new love in my life that always makes a mess and never fails to make me smile. As a creative person, I’ve mostly dealt with 3D things like sculpture and carvings so being able to call myself a painter now is a bit of a trip and something I never thought I’d be able to do.

So this winter, as I reflect on the year that is coming to a close, I am happy to report that I have spent my time wisely on a craft that has brought me tremendous joy and will continue to both fuel and push my creative mind for as long as I stick with it. I hope that in this coming year you find the inspiration to give this medium a chance if you’ve only been watching from the sidelines, doing your homework and waiting for your moment.
