It makes my heart sing to use bright colors, and when I can contrast them with black – well, I am never happier. When I used to sew and quilt, I would always be looking to create a stained-glass effect in my quilts by combining the black with the jewel-like bright colors.
I’m just enjoying another high contrast swipe today. No fancy experiments, just having fun with my pouring, and seeing how a swipe on canvas might be any different to the swipes I’ve done in the past on panels and tiles. I love the way the black outlines all of the other colored cells. I could simply do these every day and still be happy!
Used in this painting:
Lemon Yellow, Magenta, Bright Orange, Pthalo Green and Black
All paints were mixed 1 part Floetrol, 2 parts paint, water as needed plus treadmill belt silicone oil
Enjoy the video below.
As usual, here is a quick slideshow of the painting both wet and dry, and some closeups of all those gorgeous bright colored details.
After being told in high school that she was so bad at art that she should switch to another subject, Deby didn’t paint again for 35 years. Then a stroke released a new wave of creativity and she began exploring with dot painting, abstract and eventually acrylic pouring, and at last the joy of working with color returned.
You don’t need ‘talent’ to be an acrylic pouring artist – just enthusiasm, some basic instruction, and a willingness to try, fail and try again. Paint along with her and learn from her many mistakes, and you’ll soon make great art together.
What do you use to varnish/ gloss your paintings?
I like to use MinWax Polycrylic – there’s an article about it you can read here – http://acrylicpouring.com/recommended-protective-finish-paintings/
Love your results. Wish I could say the same about my experiments. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve tried your recipe, other people’s recipes for mixing the paints and silicon, my cells are really teeny tiny. I would like to know what I’m doing wrong . I’ve used campus, canvas boards, and ceramic tile. Help!

Same issues. No cells. Wasted lots of tiles and boards. Disappointed ? Not sure what I’m doing wrong
I’m sorry to hear that Sandie. Are you on Facebook? Its easy there to chat and share tips and pictures. If you come and join us in the group, post a picture and details of your materials and we will all try to diagnose and set you on the right path.
I loved your videos, got a lot of info from them and will try swiping on my next projects. I do have a problem though that I am hoping you can help me with. Varnishing or finishing …… don’t know what to use. I’ve tried a product and applied it with a sponge paint brush, did not like the streaky results. Is there a spray I can use. Help. Please!
I like to use the Polycrylic. I apply it with a brush and if you use it nice and wet it self-levels and goes super smooth and glossy so there aren’t any visible brush strokes. You can read more about it here.
