Bright Colors Flip Cup with Black Gives Surprise Results

I have this bright colors sample pack from DecoArt which I used in a swipe painting before and really loved. So I was wondering how they would work in a flip cup. That’s a lot of colors, and although they are nicely co-ordinated, would they all just blend into something a bit dull and meh? Let’s add some black for some high contrast, and find out!

Pin MeBright colors plus black used in an acrylic pouring flip cup gives beautiful muted and subtle color scheme. Video tutorial on how to make cells with an acrylic pour.

I have to say I love this pack of colors. It’s very reasonably priced, the colors are great together and they performed perfectly in my earlier swipe painting. For me, choosing colors is often the most difficult part of the painting process, so to have a set of paints ready picked and put together that work together perfectly – well, I wish there were more of these sets I could buy. So I’ll mix them up in a flip cup with a bit of black and see how they work out there too.

Materials used in this painting:
DecoArt Crafters Acrylic Bright Sample Pack
Blick Student Acrylics in Mars Black
Floetrol
Treadmill belt silicone oil
Canvas from economy pack
4oz cups with lids
Polycrylic gloss protective finish

Recipe for this painting:
All paints were mixed approx 2 parts paint, 1 part Floetrol plus water as needed to consistency in just a couple of the colors because they were a bit thicker than the others. A couple of drops of the silicone oil in each color, including the black.

I was really delighted how using the black in this flip cup made such a muted, soft and subtle color scheme. Of course the paint colors are perfectly co-originated, but the result is so very different to the swipe that I did with black, it just shows how versatile they are. Don’t forget to add them to your cart.

As usual, enjoy a slideshow below with photos of this pour, both wet and dry and close-ups of the details.

    1. Sure it is Mona, any surface that can be painted will work for this style of painting. Of course each might need to be prepared slightly differently depending on the type of surface you are working on, but yes, go for it!

  1. Miss Deby. I would absolutely love to have, my new counter tops with this effect & coloring. What would you suggest to use for glossing?
For crockpot pots or pans etc.. that may be too hot or warm to touch on a new counter top. Thank you for your response

    1. I have found someone who has some kind of acrylic Base, that is heat resistace, cutting foods & other kitchen mishaps. Let me see if I can find this again & I’ll let you know.

Hi. I’m doing art with a spec needs class, and I’m learning as I’m teaching. Did you mix anything into the paints when you put into the cups? Have noticed some people do. Looking for the simplest steps, but still nice enough results to give as gifts
    Than you,
    Melanie

  3. I miss you Deby. It was great to rewatch you in this video. I hope you and your family are well.

  4. When you talk about the self levelling of polycrylic varnish, do you brush it on thickly or maybe even pour it on so that it can level out? If so, would it not crack due to the thickness of the layer or layers?
    Thank you, Deby.

  5. I had an art teacher and I use that term lightly, who also told me I had no talent and to leave the art to “the creatives”

Discovered painting again during quarantine and soon after paint pouring. It was a way for me to tackle my depression and anxiety from being out of work. I have since sold 15 paintings to people outside of my friends and family. I wish I could find that teacher now LOL

    Miss Deby Coles,

If you can find what kind of the Acrylic Base for the heat resistance, cutting & other mishaps. Could you please send me the information on this. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much
